Struggle for Gypsum

There are many interesting projects at German universities on the subject of sustainability & recycling. One of them deals with the topic of gypsum recycling.

Gypsum is an important raw material in the construction industry, for example as a component of cement.

Around 10 million tons of gypsum are needed every year. About 5 million tons of it come from gypsum mining, 5 million from flue gas desulfurization at coal-fired power plants and only about 45,000 tons come from recycling. Nordhausen University of Applied Sciences would like to increase this share. Therefore, it is in the process of recording the gypsum waste quantities in the region as part of the « WIR! initiative – « Gypsum Recycling as an Opportunity for the Southern Harz » and thus paving the way for increasing the recycling of returned gypsum-containing waste.

We are pleased that we can support this important project with one of our jaw crushers (Type: Jaw crusher EB 200×125 – L).

In addition, there are reports from ARD & MDR about the initiative, about the background why gypsum mining harms the environment and why it is to be expected that this – without recycling – will rather be expanded in the coming years (german).
